Description
A Relic (レリック) is the fundamental supernatural power of the world of "That's My Dungeon My Life," filling the role that magic, skills, and gifts play in other settings. Relics are innate and are said to be inscribed upon the soul: when one manifests, its name and effect appear instantly in the holder's mind, whether as text or a voice. A fair number of people possess a Relic, and even a single one is described as "a ray of light" for surviving this harsh world — yet, for reasons no one understands, some people are born with none at all. This scarcity gives rise to Relic-supremacism (レリック主義者), a bigotry that reveres Relic-holders and discriminates against those without; the protagonist Wof openly despises and holds such people in contempt, insisting that luck, stamina, effort, and Relics are all merely tools.
Relics are catalogued into broad categories, including attribute types (the eight elements of fire, water, wind, earth, wood, lightning, light, and dark), body-enhancement types, exploration types, transformation types, restriction types (very powerful but conditional), summoning types, spatial types (such as Vanish, Teleport, and Storage), life/utility types, and the rare pseudo-deification types. Some Relics carry an active duration and a cooldown. Their power can be increased through Oreparts — media items that amplify or draw out a Relic's strength, provided the Relic and the Orepart are compatible; an incompatible Orepart is merely an ordinary weapon or accessory.
The number of Relics a being holds is a rough measure of threat. Monsters gain Relics from the Silver rank upward: Silver-rank monsters hold one, Gold-rank two or more, Gem-rank four or more (able to destroy a city single-handed), and Treasure-rank beings — the strongest of whom are called gods — can lay waste to nations. Certain races are defined by their Relics: the Fairial always possess 'Fairy's Avatar,' while the noble Edda invariably hold exactly two Relics and worship the god Generous.
Wof is exceptional in being born with four Relics, a state he himself considers 'strange and abnormal.' His known three are Danger Detection (危機判別), which color-codes hazards; Wheel of Fortune (フォーチューンの輪), which reveals the location of rare treasures; and Vanish (バニッシュ), a spatial Relic that makes touched objects disappear with fine selective control. His fourth and most dangerous Relic — long hidden in the text — is Generous (ジェネラス), a legendary pseudo-deification Relic that lets him transiently take on the aspect of the god Generous. He keeps this fourth Relic secret, mindful that 'rarity robs one of freedom,' and dislikes relying on it, wishing instead to earn strength that does not depend on it.
