Description

The protagonist, originally a veteran of an elite modern infantry unit nicknamed the Iron Wall. Reborn into the body of Little Locke, the only male heir of the Norton knight family, while studying at the Dawn Academy in Morant.

Rises from a Black Iron-rank cadet to a Gold-rank knight, then to the head of the family. Treats his domain less as a fief to rule and more as a balance sheet to run: mercenary contracts, harvest counts, border raids and arms manufacturing all get the same managerial attention.

Married to Lady Tressi. Owns the family's signature steel crossbow workshop and the Mtoburo river port.

**Arrivals & first kingdom moves (ch 41–95).** Found in Morant by Sedekamp and Patt after a ten-year hunt; Lorist agrees to return north only when he realises he can run the family ledger his own way. The convoy fights through Madrass, crosses the Mitoburo at the lower ford in Baron Shulas's holding, and takes the Kemmes-built wall the same day they reach Norton land. The inheritance ceremony in ch 88 hands him the title; by ch 95 he's already reforming the army on his Iron-Wall-veteran instincts.

**Tverdynya arc (ch 133–166).** Duke Lukins sends Knights Chevany and Henned with four thousand soldiers. Lorist wipes them out, releases Henned by chivalric custom, and triggers a chain that ends with Henned defecting back as Baron Shahin and the coalition losing the Battle of Tverdynya. After wintering in Kobo under Fatty Shi, the northern convoy crosses back into the Northern Lands in spring and consolidates the four-family bloc.

**Second Prince crisis (ch 167–200).** Princess Silivia's escort, the Iron Guard's last gasp, and the Chain Bridge retreat. Lorist signs the four-family alliance, fortifies the snow-salt and steel monopolies, and lets the Second Prince withdraw rather than chase him across the Crissen frontier.

Appearance

Lorist inhabits the body of Little Locke, a tall, solidly built youth of a northern knight family, gifted at martial arts from childhood. As a cadet in Morant he already stood out in the fencing hall, and his boyhood rival Patt, returning ten years later, had grown even taller than him — the two had been teased as children for butting heads like young bulls.

In his prime he is a trim, upright warrior: years of campaigning, fencing, and a daily dawn drill of the eight basic sword forms keep him hard. In the late chapters, after top-rank duels, he is shown walking off the field in mud-spattered, slashed clothing with a cloak torn nearly in half — yet without a scratch on his calm, relaxed face.

Personality

In his past life Lorist lived two fates at once: seven years as a career soldier in an elite infantry unit nicknamed the Iron Wall, then as the owner of a small craft workshop where he tried anything to earn a living. From this comes his dual cast of mind: the discipline and cool of a soldier who digs a bullet out of a wound with a knife on the march, and the cost-counting instinct of a tradesman who weighs every coin.

He runs his domain not like a feudal lord but like a company chief executive: mercenary contracts, harvest reports, arms manufacturing, and border raids all get the same managerial attention, and he works the paperwork himself. He despises caste arrogance — at heart he stays the forty-something everyman for whom 'the victor is king, the loser a bandit, and all people are equal' — and so takes in former bandits, pirates, and convicts whenever they prove useful.

He is also hot-tempered, fond of charging into the front rank (for which his knights scold him), can be cynical and blunt, yet prizes loyalty: he repays comrades from both lives with generosity and protection, and his disciples — Redi, Swad, Jenorio — with fatherly care.

Background

In his past life Lorist was born in a small town in southern China to a hereditary family of martial artists and Chinese physicians; his grandfather, a healer, commanded 'hidden force.' In his youth he dropped out of school and joined the army, serving seven years in an elite infantry unit nicknamed the Iron Wall and rising to senior sergeant. When his father fell ill and the army downsized, he left to take over the family's small workshop. At a reunion of old comrades he drank too much — and woke up in another world.

His new body is Lorist Norton, called Little Locke, second son of Baron Norton. House Norton, hereditary military nobility, descends from a forest hunter whom Crissen I raised to baron, granting him a vast strip of northern wasteland and a high-rank secret art — the Flaming Flame Combat Force — charging the line to guard the empire's northern frontier for generations. The Crissen court styled the Nortons the 'Northern Wrathful Bear.'

As a child, after his mother died bearing his younger brother, Little Locke came to hate the boy and, when his Combat Force awoke at thirteen, pushed him into a well in a fit of jealousy. For this his father exiled him thousands of li to Morant, to study and never return unsummoned. Ten years later disaster struck the house: the eldest brother died in Duke Lukins's retinue under the Second Prince, the third uncle (caravan-master) was thrown from a horse and killed, and the old baron himself died of wounds after a campaign against mountain barbarians. Only the exile survived — and old steward Krais sent Sedekamp and Patt to find him.

Story

In Morant Lorist spent ten years as 'Black Iron Lorist' — a Combat Force instructor at the Dawn Academy, the 'Silver Invincible' with three thousand wins in a row, a man of means. The family's news blindsides him: he has no wish to return to the northern backwater, but the 'soul-mark' of the body's former owner robs him of sleep, and by Moon Lake he finally decides to go home (ch 41–44). He assembles a convoy, hires mercenaries, accepts the oaths of Bodfinger and his companions — Patt, Redi, El — and leads the column six thousand li north (ch 45).

Fighting through the Madrass principality and crossing the lower Mitoburo ford into the Northern Lands (ch 82), he storms the Kemmes double wall of Rockcastle on his first day (ch 83–86), and in ch 88 holds the inheritance ceremony to become head of house and Baron Norton. He then rebuilds the domain like a business: awakening Combat Force in recruits by his new simple method, resettling the slave camp, founding seven towns, schools, and an academy on the Plain of Abundance, and building a dark-iron foundry at Blade Ridge where Master Shid and old Master Yu Lian, with his hydraulic hammers, forge steel for armour and the signature steel crossbows (ch 95–110, 177).

Duke Lukins lands the first great blow, sending Knights Chevany and Henned with four thousand men; Lorist annihilates the campaign and frees the captive Henned by chivalric custom — who, humiliated, defects to the Nortons with five thousand Northern Corps soldiers. After wintering near Kobo under Fatty Shi, the northern convoy returns in spring, and at Rockcastle (Tverdynya) the Lukins coalition is broken and Baron Camora pulled from the water dungeon (ch 133, 158–166). Lorist then beats off magical beast tides with triple ice-walls and thousands of steel wheeled crossbows, refuses the Second Prince, seals the four-family alliance of the Northern Lands, and escorts Princess Sylvia (ch 173–200).

The war widens on every front. Lorist moves manufacturing and trade to the coast: at the Lanzan River estuary in the Black Mud Swamp he builds a seaport and raises the Northern Fleet, through which House Norton reaches Morant and distant lands (ch 185, 268, 498). He crushes the slaver Kingdom of Haniabada that raided his island of Shilowas and captured Fatty Shi, deals with Grand Duke Fisabrun and the nomad steppes, masters gunpowder from the gnomes, and equips his army with bronze cannon and torpedo ships (ch 268, 379–394, 497–508).

By the year 1781 (ch 543) Lorist is Grand Duke of the Northern Lands, addressed as 'Your Highness': he has occupied Morant, smashed the Trade Union's army on the Plain of Magical Hills, and signed an independence treaty (ch 541, 546). Princess Sylvia and his concubines bear him children; Lady Tressi and Sedekamp run the domain and the home front. By the close the continent is largely pacified, the Second Prince becomes emperor of a reunified Crissen Empire backed by House Norton, and Lorist himself is the north's only Sword Saint, whose lands no one dares touch (ch 561–591).

Powers & Abilities

Lorist cultivates the family Flaming Flame Combat Force and climbs the whole rank ladder: from a Black Iron third-star knight-apprentice at the Dawn Academy — through Silver and Gold — to Master of the Sword (a rank of four tiers), and by the late chapters to Sword Saint, first stage. This is a rarefied height: across the whole continent there are only a handful of Sword Saints, and most, like Lorist, are at the first stage.

His true trump is the Sword Saint's blood-killing domain: an unseen blood-red field of icy killing intent that by the finale spans fifteen metres. It is unique in density: an opponent caught in it, even another Sword Saint, feels mired as if dropped into a cauldron of boiling porridge — movement becomes agonisingly slow, as though a mountain were pressing down. With this trait Lorist twice fights the Storm Sword Saint (Master Magrute) to a draw, whose domain is twice as wide but far thinner.

Beyond Combat Force, Lorist wields a separate internal force and the martial inheritance of his past life — his unarmed, 'monkish'-looking style lets him fell higher-ranked foes: even as a Black Iron house head he gravely wounded the Gold Knight Tabek, baffling Duke Lukins. He heals comrades by pulse-reading and potions, and with 'dynamic vision' (which he himself drills into Redi and Patt on a spinning chair) reads the lines of fast strikes as if in slow motion.

But Lorist's chief weapon is the military doctrine of an engineer and quartermaster. He arms his troops with signature steel crossbows and wheeled ballistae, heavy steel armour, stone-throwing catapults, and later gunpowder, bronze cannon firing grapeshot, and torpedo ships. His army — Bodfinger's heavy regiments, the Flying Tiger Corps, the Hunting Cavalry Corps, Yuri's recon battalion, the Wrath Bear Order, the Guard — wins by mass firepower at range rather than knightly valour: at Bruvia six hundred grapeshot cannon literally erase a hundred-thousand-strong Trade Union column.

Holdings

Lorist's heart is Rockcastle, the Nortons' valley fortress on a great slab of white rock: on every side but the road, natural cliffs over ten metres high; Viscount Kemmes besieged it for two weeks and left empty-handed. The castle is sealed by the double wall left from the Kemmes occupation (a seven-metre outer rampart and a ten-metre inner wall), Lady Tressi runs its inner household, and Lorist returns here from every campaign. Nearby lie the towns of Beye and Beiyuan, the town of Gildusk as the neighbouring grand duke's seat, and Maple Forest Estate serves as a rear home.

The domain's industrial hub is Blade Ridge, where at a dark-iron deposit Lorist builds a dark-iron foundry: seven furnaces yield thousands of jin of ingots a day, and hydraulic hammers of Lorist's design let Master Shid and old Master Yu Lian mass-forge the springy steel for crossbow arms and armour. Here too are the steel crossbow workshop (Master Falin) and an arms base turning out the signature steel wheeled crossbows, ballistae, and heavy plate; later gunpowder and cannon works are added.

The Northern Lands reach the outside world by three arteries: the upper and lower fords of the Mitoburo River and the eastern Chain Bridge. When Grand Duke Madrass closes the lower ford, Lorist turns to the sea: at the Lanzan River estuary in the Black Mud Swamp, where it meets Blade Ridge, he drains the swamp with a hundred-li dyke and builds a seaport. On it rises the Northern Fleet (Baron Sembawood) with torpedo ships — through which the Nortons trade from Madrass and Andinak to Morant and smash the Trade Union's 'Invincible Fleet.'

As the wars grind on, Lorist's holdings spread far beyond the ancestral lands: the island of Shilowas and overseas colonies, copper and gold mines, manors taken from neighbours (Baron Shahin's Sakura Ridge), the four-family bloc of the Northern Lands, an occupied Morant with the Plain of Magical Hills and its surrounding provinces, and by the finale an independent Grand Duchy of Norton, to which the Trade Union and Morant's Free Union pay in labour, food, and land.

Trivia

In Morant Lorist was known by the nicknames 'Black Iron Lorist' and the 'Silver Invincible,' and the Dawn Academy raised a full-length bronze statue of him — barely a dozen people knew his real name, Lorist Norton, which is why Sedekamp and Patt took so long to find him.

His real talent for accounting is an inheritance from his past life: what was an arcane science to the locals was 'fourth- or fifth-grade arithmetic' to the former workshop owner, and he passed the academy's accounting course in a single year.

His 'dynamic vision' is a signature method from his past life: he drills it into his disciples with a spinning wheel and chair, and even the iron veterans of the Iron Wall could not endure the ordeal two days running.

A Sword Saint's power grants its bearer roughly thirty extra years of life — Lorist throws this in the face of the cowardly old man Enjerek, the first Master of the Sword of his house, to press him back into service.
