Nanahoshi

Nanahoshi is another Japanese girl, transported against her will into this world as a result of the Teleport Incident; at the moment of the catastrophe she, along with others, was struck by a car. Who arranged the transfer, and why, no one knows — even Orsted says that nothing of the kind had ever happened before.

In order to return home, she throws herself headlong into the study of summoning magic — a kin to teleportation magic. For this she needs colossal volumes of mana, and that is precisely why Rudeus's help proves invaluable to her.

Nanahoshi is a Japanese girl about the same age as Rudeus is in this world. In public she long wears a smooth white mask, concealing her face. After a serious illness she grows noticeably thinner and gaunt; she usually carries herself with a cool detachment.

The name "Nanahoshi" means "Seven Stars" — and this will become an important detail in her own theory.

Cold, withdrawn, and utterly conscientious, Nanahoshi regards everything in this world with indifference — as if she wants to finish the matter as soon as possible and return home. At first she is sharp and unfriendly, but after Rudeus helps her more than once, she sincerely repents and warms up.

She is a disciplined researcher: she keeps records, builds hypotheses, and analyzes her failures methodically, not letting despair gain the upper hand — even when her chief hope collapses.

At the Ranoa Magic University, Nanahoshi hides behind the guise of the "White Mask" and is connected to Orsted. On learning that Rudeus is also a native of her world, she forms an alliance with him and begins to exchange knowledge (it is she who supplies him with spirit-summoning scrolls). Rudeus becomes her reservoir of mana in her long studies of teleportation.

Together with Perugius and his servants, she spends years perfecting an enormous Teleportation magic circle capable of returning her home. When the day of return comes, the ritual suddenly fails: the circle fills with black light and goes out, as if someone had intercepted the mana — and Nanahoshi remains in this world.

She does not break: she had allowed for this possibility even earlier (warned by the future Rudeus) and had prepared in advance a notebook, "A Hypothesis on Failure at the Final Stage." From this hypothesis grows her "Seven Stars" theory: the transfer bound together in time several people from her world (including Nanahoshi herself, Rudeus, and a certain Shinohara Akito), and perhaps she can return only together with them, or by creating something more. Perugius swears by the title of Dragon King to bring the circle to perfection. To the end of Rudeus's life, the truth about the Teleport Incident remains unsolved, but Nanahoshi does not abandon her hypotheses.

Nanahoshi is a talented and methodical researcher of magic, a specialist in summoning magic and teleportation magic — fields in which this world has almost no real experts. Together with Perugius she creates the most powerful Teleportation magic circle.

Because she is not a native of this world, no immunity to magic forms in her, and she suffers from an incurable illness of mana accumulation; it has to be held in check with a decoction of Sokas grass.
