Ellenoa

Ellenoa is a high elf, 'Daughter of the Blue Evergreen Tribe' and one of only six high elves in the entire world. High elves are more spirit than elf: they barely need food or sleep, cannot die of hunger and do not tire without rest. All of them carry the blood of their progenitor Arva and serve as 'gardeners' of the World Tree — only direct descendants of Arva may enter Yggdrasil's special region and interface with its neural network, Ratatoskr. Ellenoa is newly emerged and still young; she was born not in Elfheim itself but in a small forest, which leaves her feeling slightly out of place among her kin.

She is also the 'sixth dancer' of a prophecy uttered more than a century earlier at the Fountain of Wisdom by the greatest elementalist, Mirdal Herseim: 'After many years the sixth dancer will open her eyes, and forgotten beings will wake from deep sleep. Two states will vie, bringing untold catastrophe. But fear not: a guest from afar will avert it.' That same Mirdal once summoned the earth spirit Mithra for Theodore — and left a gift for Theodore himself in the elves' sacred land. So the prophecy guides the 'guest from afar' to Ellenoa.

High elves are born neutral, leaning female, and only once and forever choose a sex, determined by the sex of their chosen partner. Unlike the pure Arvas, who can change sex at will, for a high elf this choice is irreversible, and rejection by the chosen one is 'half a death.' Theodore and Ellenoa first meet when he frees her and eight other elves from the slavers of the 'Closed Circle' — a front for the Kingdom of Austin, which abducted her to use her land-healing power against its drought. From then on she calls him her savior; the decisive moment, though, is when he throws himself into a hopeless fight with the sin-grimoire Superbia (Pride) only to save her.

Gentle, serious and shy, unable to lie as all elves are — and a lie cannot pass through Ratatoskr at all — Ellenoa becomes a key ally of Theodore and the cornerstone of Meltor's alliance with Elfheim. She heals his wounds with her green prana, raises Mithra's essence to a lieutenant spirit, gifts a seed of Yggdrasil, and personally leads him into Elfheim and to the Fountain of Wisdom — a sanctuary opened only twice in all elven history. Her feelings grow into love: now a full woman, she confesses to him plainly in Mana-ville, asking him not to rush and not to mistake duty for the heart.

King Kurt III, seeing her affection, deliberately pairs her with Theodore: a marriage of the next Tower Master and a high elf would bind the two realms forever. In the Age of Peace, Ellenoa is one of Theodore's wives and the keeper-tuner of the World Tree; so that the 'wedge' may hold the gods to the earth, she is bound to her place and loses almost all freedom to wander — yet she accepts it without hesitation, counting it her duty. She longs to become a mother and lives in chambers within Yggdrasil, where Theodore comes to her for several months of each year.

Ellenoa's gift is to amplify the power of nature unconsciously and direct it consciously. Blackened earth comes alive around her bare feet, a grapevine sprouts from seed within an evening, and her green prana — on the level of priestly divine healing — closes wounds, scrapes and fatigue. Yet she heals flesh, not the will behind it: a wound steeped in another's willpower her magic cannot erase. She is no fighter: when Superbia attacked she could only tremble while Theodore flung her to safety on the wind.

Ellenoa's elven privileges are telepathy spoken 'straight to the heart,' the summoning of sylph messengers (translucent sparrow-spirits), borrowing mana from the forest, and command over hundreds of thousands of plants — parting roots and lifting branches to open a path through the Great Forest without harming it. Through Ratatoskr she projects a full clone-avatar of earth, roots and leaves wrapped in prana while her true body remains in Elfheim. Her foresight is modest: she only senses an approaching 'end,' an echo of an ancestral power that wakes in danger.

Theodore himself grows through Ellenoa. She performs a rite raising the spirit Mithra to lieutenant rank and doubling her might (what takes elementalists decades), gifts the seed of Yggdrasil that opens his access to Ratatoskr and command over the tree-races, and leads him to the Fountain of Wisdom, where Mirdal's preserved memory properly unseals the fourth lock of Gluttony.

Abducted by Austin's agents, who hoped to break their drought with her power, Ellenoa surrendered when the foe took her companions hostage. From captivity she is freed by Theodore, who cut down the slavers of the 'Closed Circle' in Bergen. Their bond is born not of the rescue itself but of what follows: the sin-grimoire Superbia soon comes for the 'high elf,' and Theodore — knowing the fight is hopeless — hurls himself in to shield her, and from that day she longs for him.

Later Ellenoa brings Meltor's delegation into Elfheim, defends Theodore's sincerity before the distrustful Naya, shows him the feast on the World Tree's branch and leads him to the Fountain of Wisdom. Between Elfheim and Meltor she forges a firm alliance, and her gifts — Mithra's awakening and the seed of Yggdrasil — shape Theodore's strength for years. Having chosen him, she becomes a full woman, and at the Mana-ville banquet, where King Kurt has named Theodore her partner, she confesses to him plainly.

In the Age of Peace, Ellenoa is Theodore's wife and keeper of the World Tree, bound to Yggdrasil by a 'wedge' that holds the gods to the earth. She tunes the Tree, dreams of a child, and awaits the husband who spends part of the year with her. From the seed the two of them planted together, a swiftly growing ash rises on the Miller estate — not the World Tree, but a living echo of it.
