Steward Kodan

Holds the territorial admin for the northern arc of the Norton estate. He's the one Joost and Berunek consult on land grants, mercenary contracts and the wave of refugees that follow the Tverdynya campaign.

Supple and shrewd in dealing with people — a master of personnel matters. He knows how to manoeuvre: during Hansek's rebellion he had to play along with the conspirator just to keep the family's administrative machinery from seizing up — while quietly working against him.

One of the three stewards the late old Steward Kreis left to Lorist to aid the house — alongside Hansek and Spel. Kodan handles territorial administration and personnel: land allotment, mercenary contracts, the settling of people.

He runs the land administration of the northern part of the Norton holdings: people come to him over land, mercenaries and the waves of refugees after the campaigns (chs 140, 168). He allocates labour on the construction sites together with Lady Tressi (ch 106).

During Steward Hansek's rebellion (chs 484-490) he stays loyal to Lorist: through his mediation, and with Lady Krisia's help, Lady Sylvia, the children and the concubines safely leave Rage Bear City for Sakura Ridge. After Lorist's return it is Kodan who conducts the inquiry and passes sentence on the more than a thousand implicated in the coup (ch 491).
