Description

Bought a barony from the Second Prince and proclaimed the restoration of the Filim Family, recruiting roughly fifty wandering knights for the Kemmes tournament.

Sends an envoy to buy five thousand sets of iron armour from House Norton; later survives an assassination attempt that costs him several house guards.

Personality

Young, ambitious and obsessed with restoring House Filim's former glory. His nickname is Chuck. By nature a practical dealer: he recruits wandering knights, buys steel armour from the Nortons in bulk, and never turns down a profitable scheme (with Count Kemmes and Henned he set up the resale of old armour to Grand Duke Madras). In time Lorist matches his daughter to his retainer Schward.

Background

A direct descendant of House Filim, whose crest is a silver winged horse; as the Nortons are called the Furious Bear house, so the Filims are called the Flying Horse house. A century ago House Filim was one of seven noble lines that raised the 'Lunar Rebellion' against Crissen IV over a silver-moon magic stone. Crissen IV barely won and wiped out all seven houses; the stone vanished without trace.

Charlwood bought a Northern Lands barony from the Iberian Second Prince and proclaimed the restoration of House Filim, recruiting wandering knights at a tournament hosted by House Kemmes.

Story

First mentioned (ch 128) when his envoys unsuccessfully compete with the Nortons to recruit the wandering knight Vassima. At the Battle of Rockcastle (ch 165) Baron Filim of the Pegasus house was the first to turn his horse and flee, drawing the rest of Duke Lukins's coalition lords after him.

After the Iberian Second Prince's defeat Charlwood, by agreement with Lorist, stormed the Henderlif bridge checkpoint and Castle Frest and received half the former Grand Duke's lands — two towns and three manors, becoming one of the four alliance lords.

In Gildusk it was he who brought troops and besieged the ducal palace, demanding Princess Silivia free the captive Henned and Tabek, and summoned Lorist to break the deadlock (ch 191-192). Through the middle of the story he is one of Lorist's closest allies; with Henned he raids the Iberian Second Prince's Winston province. He sends envoys to the Nortons for bulk steel armour (ch 182).
