Description
Vermilion is an ancient warrior marquisate of the Kingdom of Gloria, producing the strongest swordsmen generation after generation. The house head, Lyan, bears the Holy Sword skill, and the heir Kane the Sword Master; by tradition, whoever among them attains the Holy Sword must slay a dragon and earn the Dragonslayer title.
Within its lands (the Vermilion marquisate) the house wields near-unlimited power: courts, taxes, executions — all in the marquis's hands. The illegitimate Alan grew up here as an outcast, and at twelve was driven out on a false charge, forbidden to bear the family name.
The house maintains friendly ties with other nobles — Count Fanda, for instance — extending its influence into neighboring lands. This forces Alan to keep a low profile where he might be reported to the Vermilions, making the house a background threat throughout the early part of the story.
Dragonslayer tradition
The house's key custom is to send the heir who has become a Holy Sword to slay a dragon for the prestigious Dragonslayer title. Alan builds his first revenge on the family around sabotaging Kane's hunt.
