Description
Kane is the eldest son of Marquis Lyan Vermilion's lawful wife, three years older than Alan and heir to the warrior house. He holds the Sword Master skill, which is believed to one day grow into the Holy Sword. It was his strength and standing that made Alan a 'spare who isn't even good for that' within the family.
From childhood Kane openly humiliated his half-brother: he beat him with a wooden sword under the guise of training and forbade the servants to care for him. Smug and certain of his superiority, he saw Alan as a useless reject 'abandoned by God himself.'
By Vermilion tradition, an heir who becomes a Holy Sword must slay a dragon and earn the Dragonslayer title. Kane sets out on such a hunt after a stampede in Count Fanda's domain — but Alan, secretly disguised as the woman Alice, kills the weakened Ruby Dragon first and erases every trace. Kane returns empty-handed and disgraced, his skill no closer to advancing.
Role in the story
Kane embodies the Vermilion arrogance that Alan suffered under. His dragon hunt becomes Alan's first deliberate revenge against the family: by robbing his brother of a deserved victory, Alan shows that he will no longer let the house dispose of others' fates.
