Jaye

Jaye is a mysterious person who is part of the group of adventurers gathered by the Old Witch to infiltrate the secret sanctuary of the Soul Slayers sect. From his first appearance, Jaye stands out for his extreme reserve: he is completely wrapped in a heavy cloak, barely speaks, and keeps to the sidelines, so that even Leylin, who found himself beside him in a narrow underground corridor, is unable to determine his companion's gender. In the agreement with the Old Witch, Jaye participates on equal footing with the other members of the group—the Bloody Hand, the Copper Ring, and Tonghuang. As part of his share of the spoils, he hopes to obtain water from the Lake of Sighs, which points indirectly to his interest in uncommon alchemical or magical resources and hints at his membership in the circles of Gu masters devoted to subtle ritual practices. At the key moments of the expedition, Jaye shows resolve: it is he who first accepts the plan proposed by the Old Witch to split up and search the laboratories, setting an example for the rest of the participants. Despite his terseness, his word carries weight—after his agreement, the hesitant Leylin also nods, and the discontented Tonghuang has no choice but to join the common decision. Leylin, accustomed to analyzing the motives of those around him, maintains a cautious attitude toward Jaye, aware that the Old Witch and her old allies have their own hidden calculations.
