Satella is the Witch of Envy, blamed for the Great Calamity that ravaged the world 400 years ago and now sealed away in a distant shrine. In truth, "Satella" is a personality distinct from the Witch of Envy, formed when she took in an incompatible Witch Factor.
By legend she is a silver-haired half-elf with amethyst, bluish-tinted eyes, her form usually shrouded in impossibly deep black mist. Both personalities love Subaru, but where the Witch is aggressive and possessive, Satella is gentler and genuinely concerned for his welfare — the reason both gave him Return by Death was to keep him from truly dying.
The Witch functions as the series' overarching presence, silencing Subaru whenever he tries to speak of his Authority and reacting with lethal fury if he reveals it. She shares an unexplained connection with both Subaru and Emilia, whom she strikingly resembles, and formally appears in Arc 4.
