The Record of the Four Holy Weapons is a worn old book with a velvet-red cover and a nearly illegible golden title that Naofumi discovers in a library shortly before he is summoned. Its contents closely mirror the world he is later transported to.
The book tells of a fantasy world menaced by apocalyptic Waves of destruction, defended by four Heroes summoned from another world and armed with the Sword, Spear, Bow, and Shield. It briefly characterizes some of them: the Spear Hero valued his friends, and the Bow Hero would never tolerate injustice.
Tellingly, the pages describing the Shield Hero are blank beyond his introduction — a detail that foreshadows Naofumi's own uncertain, unwritten role. The book's true origins are never explained.
