I headed to the adventurer's guild to report the completion of my quest.
"So here's your reward—five copper coins. Seriously, you're something else. A guy who kicks up a ruckus and wrings every last coin out of a big brute takes on a job like this?"
The receptionist this time was the veteran one.
She was the one who'd filled in for Metia to handle my adventurer registration before, and her name was apparently Nancy.
"Ms. Nancy, please don't make it sound like I was the one causing trouble. I was just brushing away the sparks that flew at me."
"Sure, sure, zero self-awareness, huh? So—anything unusual come up during the quest?"
"Hm, nothing in particular… Oh, come to think of it."
"Come to think of what?"
"In the Eastern Forest, there was a mutant species of Tiger Wolf."
"!!?—Why didn't you lead with that?! That's a Gilmas-level case! We need to issue a special alert right away—"
"No, it's fine—I already took it down."
"What kind of nonsense is that?! A mutant species is at least a Gold-rank target! …Though, now that you mention it, that Gold-rank guy was intimidating you earlier and got taken down too. Anyway, get yourself to Gilmas's room."
And so I went with Ms. Nancy to Gilmas's room.
"Now then, Alan—no, adventurer Copper-rank Alan. Tell me what happened."
"Yes, sir. I went into the Eastern Forest to look for the missing girl Maa-rune, but I couldn't find any wolf-type monsters. I pushed deeper in and located the target, but then I was attacked by a White King Tiger Wolf, which I defeated."
"…Now that you mention it, we have been receiving reports of fewer wolf-type bounties these past few days. A mutant species had appeared, then? Do you have its corpse?"
"Of course. Its fur was absolutely gorgeous. Shall I bring it out at the butchery?"
"Good. Let's move. Nancy, good work—you can head back to your post."
We then moved to the butchery, and I pulled the White King Tiger Wolf out of my magic bag.
"Good grief, how huge is this thing!? I'm amazed you managed to survive fighting something like this. Gold... no, this is mithril-grade. But still, those are incredibly clean cuts. Any other wounds... you sliced off one of its front legs too? Are you already at orichalcum rank in terms of real ability?"
"Well, I think I'm strong enough not to die, at least."
"Since the mutant's dead, there's no chance of organized wolf-type beasts attacking the town. I'll have the eastern forest on alert for a while just in case. So, what are you going to do with this one?"
"I was thinking of putting it up for sale somewhere once my funds run out. Can I deliver it to the guild?"
"It's not impossible, but we don't have much experience with this kind of thing. We'd probably end up putting it up for auction in the royal capital, but the transport costs and all that will eat into your take. If you want to keep more of the money, it'd be better to deliver it directly to the Adventurers' Guild in the royal capital. Or you could deal directly with some nobles or big merchants."
"Well, I'll figure it out later."
"A beast this big, and the royal family might even come calling, ha ha!"
Gilmas let out a dry chuckle.
Hmm, that sounds like it'd be a hassle too.
The pay would probably be good, though.
For now, I'd put it back in my magic bag and maybe ask Eagle for advice.
I had no idea that the guild staff member who'd been watching the White King Tiger Wolf from a distance had gone off to report to someone afterward.
And so, I was attacked at the inn again in the middle of the night.
