The System (officially the "W System") is the seemingly supernatural framework that governs the reincarnation world. It grants every living being levels, stats, skills, titles and magic in a video-game-like fashion, and its power gaps shape the world's entire culture and politics.
The System is no natural phenomenon but a planet-scale construct designed by the senior Administrator known as D to restore the world's depleted MA Energy after a past catastrophe pushed the planet to the brink of collapse. The Administrators are mysterious, immensely powerful god-like entities who observe the world and grant skills.
Most inhabitants mistake the Administrators' work for the acts of their religions' gods, but the long-lived elves recognize the System as an artificial contrivance that drains power from those who train their skills — and treat the Administrators as hidden masterminds behind the world's wars. Shiraori, in particular, becomes the object of D's personal interest.
