Description
Maizel Walt is the reigning head of House Walt — its eighth generation — and the biological father of both Lyle and Celes, as well as the son of Brod (the seventh generation, whose consciousness resides within the family's blue Jewel). A prodigy from earliest childhood, Maizel was so gifted and self-reliant that even his celebrated father Brod felt overshadowed and unable to reach him; that quiet rift between them defined Maizel's youth, as he admired his father from afar yet never leaned on him. As an adult he became the most feared commander of the Banseim kingdom, having never lost a single battle from his very first campaign onward. His charisma, string of victories, and battle-hardened army made House Walt's forces the 'strongest army of Banseim.'
Maizel's defining ability is a uniquely powerful Anti-Skill: a Skill that blocks other people from using their Skills at all. It is so overwhelming that Maizel himself cannot use Skills, magic tools, or the blue Jewel — he fights on raw martial strength alone, wielding a saber (which he can charge with lightning) rather than relying on abilities. As a tactician he is famous for a devastating 'first-strike kill' doctrine and a set of signature battle formations; by activating his Anti-Skill early, he causes disorderly enemy armies to collapse outright, while his own disciplined troops seize the moments when the enemy's Skills are suppressed. His grandfather Brod once tried to interest him in firearms and gunpowder units, but Maizel rejected them — partly because guns and magic tools would conflict chaotically with his own Skill-suppression tactics.
Toward his family Maizel is starkly divided: cold and distant to his son Lyle, but doting and indulgent to his daughter Celes, who has fallen under the charm/domination of the woman Xenoa and controls him through it. In the climactic civil war between Baim (Lyle's domain) and House Walt, Maizel personally leads the invasion, delivering a rousing speech to tens of thousands of loyal soldiers. But on a battlefield where Skills are neutralized by his own power, Lyle turns to the very weapons Maizel scorned — rifles and cannons — to cut through his lines. Maizel, having underestimated Baim's true industrial might, is surrounded and killed at Baim (his corpse never recovered by his own side), and House Walt's army capitulates. His death is not the end: the grieving, unhinged Celes later reanimates Maizel's remains alongside those of his wife Claire, fielding them as hollow-eyed undead commanders in her legion of the dead, forcing Lyle to face his father a final time.
