Description

The eldest son of the high-noble Notos Greyrat house. In his youth, disillusioned with his strict father and the filth of nobility, he ran away from home at the age of twelve and became an adventurer; for this he was struck from the Notos lineage. As a teenager training at a fencing hall, he assaulted the young Lilia — an act that later cast a shadow over the whole family.

In his wandering days he led a party together with Elinalise and Ghislaine, and took in the sixteen-year-old Zenith. When Zenith became pregnant the party broke up. With the help of his old friend Philip Boreas Greyrat, Paul settled in the Fittoa region as a minor knight-noble and took the maid Lilia into his household.

Appearance

A young, sturdily built man with caramel-brown hair and a cocky smile. When Rudeus first saw him he struck him as strong and willful, with impressive muscles. In his adventuring prime he was the most sought-after man in the district.

Personality

Freedom-loving, childish, and hot-tempered — the sort of man who awakens a maternal instinct in women. He loved to lecture his son — be honest, be brave, protect girls — yet he himself was a known philanderer who could not rein in his impulses. At home he was a hopeless father, useless at running the household, but on the battlefield he radiated genuine charisma.

For all his flaws, he loved his family and acted for their sake to the very end. At first he strained to look like a strict father, but after he once glimpsed Rudeus's weak side he stopped pretending and grew close to his son, beginning to treat him as an equal.

Story

In Buena Village, Paul raised Rudeus, teaching him swordsmanship in the evenings, and hired Roxy as a live-in magic tutor, having recognized his son's talent. When, during Zenith's pregnancy, he became involved with Lilia and she too became pregnant, everything came out at a family council; Rudeus cunningly shifted the blame onto his father, and Zenith forgave Paul, keeping Lilia in the household. Thus two daughters were born — Norn and Aisha.

After the Teleport Incident scattered the family, Paul spent years searching for his missing wife and children, eventually basing himself on the Begaritt Continent. His reunion with Rudeus began with a quarrel and a blow, but father and son then made up. On receiving word that Zenith had been found, Paul led a party into the Teleport Labyrinth.

Deep in the labyrinth, Zenith was sealed inside a magic crystal guarded by the Manatite Hydra — a many-headed stone dragon invulnerable to magic. Before the decisive battle, Paul, acknowledging his son as an equal, ordered him to save his mother "even at the cost of your own life." In the fight Paul cut off the Hydra's heads, but at the critical moment he shielded Rudeus with his own body and was killed. Zenith was saved, but her mind was lost. His father's death became an abyss of despair for Rudeus.

Powers & Abilities

An outstanding swordsman: he wielded three styles at once — the Sword God, Water God, and North God Styles — attaining the Saint rank in each, which normally takes about ten years of dedicated training. He possessed vast combat experience, could lop off a monster's head with a single stroke, and moved with a breathtaking, almost dancing precision. In his later years his signature weapon was "Paul's Sword" — a mana-imbued blade that cut material the more easily the harder it was.

Trivia

The glossary and canon fix the name as "Paul," not "Paulo"; his full name is Paul Notos Greyrat.

The number "twelve" was sacred to him: it was at that age that he himself ran away from home, so he would not let Rudeus leave the house until he turned twelve.

After his death, Paul's Sword passed to Rudeus, though it is not the blade he used in his adventuring years. According to the Asura Kingdom reference work, Paul lived from year 388 to 423 of the Dragon Calendar.
