Cliff Grimoire

Cliff is a relative (grandson) of the Pope of the Church of Millis and a gifted mage with a considerable store of mana. He enters the Ranoa Magic University as a specially admitted student and becomes one of Rudeus's closest friends.

Cliff is a serious-looking young man. Having received the Magic Eye of Identification from Kishirika, for a time he cannot control it — the names and descriptions of every object swim before him, a whole world made of letters alone — and he wears an eye patch until he learns to master the gift.

Cliff is proud, stubborn, and principled; he calls himself a genius — and not without grounds. As a zealous follower of the faith of Millis he loves to read his friends moralizing sermons (especially Zanoba), but at heart he is loyal and responsive.

Despite his scholarly self-assurance, beside the long-lived Elinalise he is in many ways still a "child" — by her own gentle remark.

At Ranoa, Cliff grows close to Rudeus and Zanoba and falls in love with the elf Elinalise Dragonroad, whom he subsequently marries. He takes up the study of the curse laid upon her, hoping to lift it. In Perugius's fortress he receives a Magic Eye from Kishirika and gradually masters it.

Having earned the qualification of Priest of Millis, Cliff returns to his homeland — the Holy Land of Millis — where a tense church intrigue unfolds around the Pope. Formally, as a relative of the Pope, he is brought into Orsted's camp: through Cliff a connection opens to the Church of Millis, an important ally in the coming war with Laplace.

He and Elinalise have a son, Clive, whom she — a mother with centuries of experience — raises with particular tenderness. In the final war against the Man-God, Cliff serves as a healer on the battlefield, supporting Zanoba and the other tanks with Healing magic until he is knocked out of action in the hardest battle.

Cliff is a talented mage with a large volume of mana and broad knowledge; he calls himself a genius for good reason. From Kishirika he receives the Magic Eye of Identification, allowing him to determine what object stands before him — within the bounds of Kishirika's knowledge.

As a Priest of Millis he is skilled in Healing magic, and in the final war he fills the role of one of the party's key healers.
