************* But why had he come looking for her, exactly? Hu Meier didn't believe her sister's words, but deep down she harbored some doubts of her own.
Seeing her expression, Hu Jiao'er let out a soft sigh. "Obstinate to the end. You'll suffer for it sooner or later."
Hu Meier retorted in annoyance, "I'm not discussing this with you. If he came to find me, it must be about something important. I'm going to go ask him."
She was about to stand up, but her sister pressed her back down. Hu Jiao'er's bewitching eyes glinted as she giggled, "Little sister, how about a little wager?"
"What kind of wager?" Hu Meier asked, puzzled.
"Let's bet on whether he's a hypocrite! If he truly is as you say, then he should be able to keep his composure no matter what. But if he's not—then don't blame your sister for being ruthless!" As Hu Jiao'er spoke, a cold, sinister gleam flickered in her eyes.
Over the years, Hu Meier had stirred up trouble left and right in the outside world, yet had managed to keep her innocence intact. A great deal of credit for that went to this very sister of hers. Those men who harbored ill intentions and tried to force themselves on Hu Meier always ended up dying in mysterious circumstances.
Hu Meier knew her sister's methods better than anyone. One look at that expression, and she knew something wicked was being planned.
"What are you trying to do, Sister?" Hu Meier cried out in alarm.
"Just sit tight and watch. Hmph!" Hu Jiao'er waved her delicate hand, and a swirl of hazy luminance immediately enveloped her sister's body. In an instant, Hu Meier's figure gradually faded, eventually vanishing completely.
"Don't do anything reckless, Sister!" Hu Meier pounded at the empty air, but not a single sound escaped. She couldn't even step beyond the one-zhang radius around her feet. All she could do was watch everything in the room, growing increasingly anxious.
Outside, Yang Kai had waited for a long while without seeing Hu Meier come to open the door. He let out a helpless sigh.
It seemed he had truly offended her the other day. Her anger was perfectly justified. Any woman, having heard the things he'd said, would probably not have taken it calmly either.
Forget it. Yang Kai had never had high hopes to begin with. He'd only come here to try his luck. Now that it was clear she had no interest in receiving him, he naturally couldn't force the issue.
He was just about to turn and leave when Hu Meier's voice came from inside: "Come in."
Yang Kai paused, hesitated for a moment, then pushed the door open and stepped inside.
Once he entered and the door closed behind him, all the noise from the outside world vanished without a trace, leaving only a peaceful quiet.
Yang Kai raised his head and looked around. The wooden cabin was roughly the same size as the one where Su Yan had stayed, but the furnishings here were considerably nicer. Su Yan's cabin had been bare—a plain wooden shelter that perfectly matched her own cool aloofness.
Here, however, there was a table, two chairs, and even a fragrant bed draped with pink curtains as sheer as cicada wings. A dainty pillow sat on the bed, and the room was suffused with the delicate scent of a young woman.
This place and Su Yan's were practically two different worlds.
Hu Jiao'er sat by the table with a charming smile, facing the direction Yang Kai had entered. Her seductive eyes were radiant and dewy, fixed on him with an odd gaze. A smile of ambiguous meaning played at the corners of her lips, and rosy blushes adorned her cheeks—utterly captivating.
Her bare arms were exposed, their fair skin as smooth and luminous as a baby's. She wore a pair of wooden clogs, her small, elegant toes on display. Her toenails were painted in a purplish-red hue that lent her an air of wild allure.
Yang Kai's heart skipped a beat. For some reason, Hu Meier seemed especially charming today—far more alluring than when he'd last seen her.
But that smile of hers left Yang Kai feeling awkward, as if she were mocking him.
