Rein

Rein is a silver-rank adventurer and hardened veteran who has already been through several stampede-defense campaigns in Count Fanda's domain. Despite his silver rank, his experience and composure earn him a squad-leader post, a role usually entrusted to golds.

He meets Alan pragmatically — selling him, for a gold coin, an explanation of how stampedes begin, and honestly advising him to try to survive as 'bait.' Alan at first calls him 'the Extra,' but Rein turns out to be one of the few level-headed people: it is often from him that the hero learns how local affairs really work.

Unlike the traitorous commanders willing to throw low-ranks to the slaughter, Rein conscientiously protects his squad and brings it out of a stampede without losses for the first time — partly because Alan had secretly wiped out most of the monsters with a rain of stones.

Rein serves as an 'informant' and one of the few honest characters among the adventurers: through him the reader gets the explanations of stampedes, dragon-hunt traditions, and other local realities on which the early arcs are built.
