Description
Haiyaan is a legendary alchemist from roughly 4,500 years in the past, so ancient that in the present day almost nothing survives about him beyond folklore. He is best known through a children's nursery rhyme about "Haiyaan's three eggs" — a holy egg that heals any creature and repels evil, a life egg that grants long life, and a soul egg that revives the dead — which the party gradually realizes refers to real, sacred Elixir eggs. Born into the Megalopolis family, a line of alchemists, he possesses the fabled Job Relic [Alchemist], and styled himself "the alchemist who challenges the gods." His homeland, Rudbeckia, has long since fallen to ruin.
Rather than dying outright, Haiyaan used a Phoenix resurrection egg to entrust himself to the future, intending to awaken about a hundred years later. Something went wrong: his soul was sealed into the body of a white rabbit and stashed in a spare-key storeroom, and he does not reawaken until Wof's party stumbles onto him — 4,500 years late. Wof's very first act on meeting him is to punch him across the room, in revenge for the malicious "trap" Haiyaan had rigged into his ruins. Originally a tall, bald Edda man, he now inhabits a small rabbit with the purple eyes characteristic of the Edda race, and takes the awakening to a diminished, ridiculous form with much wailing self-pity.
In personality Haiyaan is a comic figure: pompous, self-aggrandizing ("I am Haiyaan! There is nothing I cannot do!"), and an incorrigible lecher who instantly hits on any beautiful woman — earning him the nickname "perverted rabbit." Beneath the buffoonery he is a genuine master alchemist, casually repairing rare Oreparts, operating the Lab and its Cauldron System (under the administrator name "Haiyaan=Megalopolis"), and even constructing artificial bodies such as Isibara. His unreached dream — the "legacy of Haiyaan" — also loomed over the past: Grand Guild Master Alhazard=Abramirin spent his life chasing it and left an inscription lamenting that he could never reach Haiyaan.
After joining Wof, Haiyaan becomes a permanent fixture of the household and a recurring source of both alchemical breakthroughs and chaos. To fund his Lab and research he founds the Haiyaan Trading Company, becoming its first president; its "light orb" product and, especially, the idol-troupe promotional gimmick "Haiyaan Girls" become explosive commercial hits that spread across the continent. He remains active alongside Wof's group through the story's later chapters, still chasing profit, still boasting, and still living out his "dungeon my life."
